Crown vs. Implant Supported Dental Bridges

Posted on 12/13/2015 by Na Xu
A diagram of a dental bridge.Bridges are a great way to improve your smile while combatting tooth loss, but there are two main varieties from which you'll need to choose when considering a dental bridge: crown and implant-supported. By better understanding the two options, you can make an informed decision with the help of your dentist.

Crown-Supported Dental Bridges

Crowns are caps that will fit over a tooth in order to bring it back to its original appearance and strength. They are also useful in supporting a dental bridge by covering the bookend teeth surrounding a gap.

The best candidates for a crown-supported bridge are people who have teeth found on either side of a tooth gap that will be able to receive a crown. If you have lost all of your teeth or have few teeth remaining, this likely won't be a good option for your mouth.

Implant-Supported Bridges

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically placed into the gum tissue and jawbone. Once implanted, these restorations offer stability and strength that is comparable to the natural teeth.

Unfortunately, the number of implants needed will vary depending on your unique situation, and there is an extensive healing process in between when the implant is put into place and when you'll get your bridge.

To be a candidate for this type of bridge, you'll need to have sufficient jawbone and be in good overall health, as oral surgery will be required. If you suffer from any major health problem, you might not be a good candidate for this type of restoration.

If you are looking into a bridge as an option to combat your tooth loss, please contact us to set up an appointment.

We will examine your mouth to determine if you are a candidate for a dental bridge, and if you are, we'll discuss whether an implant or crown-supported option is the better choice.
