What is Your Philosophy on Flossing?

Posted on 6/23/2016 by Na Xu
A man flossing his teeth.Flossing is an extremely important part of your oral hygiene routine. Not only does it help to dislodge food particles that get stuck between your teeth and might not be removed with a toothbrush, but it can also get plaque off of your teeth in order to prevent decay.

Flossing is also essential for avoiding gum disease and some of the most uncomfortable symptoms, including inflammation and bleeding of the gums.

Despite all we know about flossing, including how important it is to floss at least once per day, there are a lot of people who still avoid it entirely.

Flossing is often referred to as one of the most difficult grooming activities, and a survey completed by the American Academy of Periodontology stated that more than one-third of U.S. adults over the age of 30 would rather clean a toilet than floss their teeth.

People in this group come up with a variety of excuses for why they don't floss or don't want to floss, including:

•  They don't know how to floss. While some people with dexterity issues might have legitimate concerns, other people claim that they simply don't know how to floss correctly.
•  They don't have enough time. Some people find flossing to be too time-consuming, although it should only take about three minutes.
•  They don't think it is necessary. Some people feel that as long as they are brushing twice a day, they don't need to floss.
•  They don't floss because it hurts or the gums bleed. Healthy gums don't hurt or bleed when you floss, but if they do, this simply means that you need to floss more and not less.

Flossing is crucial for a healthy mouth. If you feel that you are having trouble with flossing and you want to learn more about the benefits of flossing, contact our office today.
