Dental Implants
Salem, OR

A dental implant is a metal device designed to replace missing teeth. The device is usually made out of titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. Unlike a dental bridge, an implant is permanent.

This innovative dental procedure allows you to have full function of your mouth while preserving your jawbone. There are no other tooth replacement options that offer these benefits, making dental implants the number one way to replace missing teeth. Whether you are already missing teeth and have a bridge or dentures in place or you are exploring your tooth replacement options for a future procedure, we encourage you to learn about dental implants and their many benefits.

The Procedure

The procedure to receive dental implants is done in several parts. First, we need to determine if you are a good candidate. In general, your mouth needs to be free from gum disease and you need to have adequate jawbone. Once the evaluation is complete and you are cleared for implants, the procedure can begin. The first part of the procedure is when the actual implant is placed. This is a surgical procedure, but the dentists at Healthy Smiles Dental have extensive experience in the process. During the surgery, we will open up your gums and gain access to your jawbone. This allows us to place the titanium screw into the bone, which will serve as your artificial tooth's roots. After the surgery, we close the area up with stitches and wait for it to heal - this takes approximately several months.

Why Titanium Screws?

Many people wonder why titanium screws are used. This material was chosen because it naturally fuses with your natural jawbone, allowing the screw to become a part of your body, which means it can stimulate the bone, allowing for regrowth, rather than bone loss. There are no worriers that anyone will see the screw, as it is beneath your gum line, just like your natural roots and will be covered with a post and porcelain crown.

The Second Procedure

Once your mouth has fully healed, we will place the post and porcelain crown in your mouth. Before this is done, we take impressions of your mouth in order to have a custom made porcelain crown made for you. The crown that you receive will look just like your other teeth and be just as strong as well. Once the porcelain crown is placed, the implant procedure is complete and you have a strong, aesthetically pleasing tooth replacement in your mouth.

Dental implants are a viable option for most patients with missing teeth. It is the only option that encourages jawbone growth rather than allowing your bone to become reabsorbed by your body. It is also the only option that is permanent and strong enough to mimic your regular teeth. If you are missing any teeth, even if you have other restorations, we encourage you to learn more about dental implants.
