Dental Crowns
Salem, OR

Dental crowns are an effective way to provide stability and function to a natural tooth that may have experienced some type of damage, whether tooth decay, infection or a fracture. The crown acts like a cap to the top of your tooth, allowing you to keep your natural tooth's roots as long as they remain healthy. It is a great alternative for patients that have experienced damage to a tooth that cannot be restored with a filling or dental bonding. Dental crowns are available in a variety of materials, but the most common choice is the porcelain crown because of its ability to mimic a natural tooth.

Why you May Need a Dental Crown

There are many reasons patients of Healthy Smiles Family Dental receive a dental crown. Dr. Xu believes in doing everything possible to save a natural tooth as it is the best way to keep the function of your teeth as well as maintain your same appearance. Missing teeth cause a multitude of issues, including a change in the structure of your face, bone loss and shifting teeth. Dental crowns can help in a variety of situations including:

•  Excessively decayed teeth that cannot be repaired with fillings
•  Fillings that have worn out or cracked
•  Broken teeth
•  Provide support to a tooth after a root canal

In some cases, dental crowns are also used after placing a post on a dental implant if you are only replacing one or two teeth.

What to Expect

The procedure is usually completed in two appointments. During the first appointment, the area is prepared to receive the crown. If there is any decay, it will be removed at this time. The tooth is then properly shaped to ensure a good fit. Before Dr. Xu places a temporary crown in your mouth, impressions of your mouth are made. These are used to have your custom dental crown made. This is to ensure that the crown fits your mouth and mimics the shape and color of your surrounding teeth. While your permanent crown is being made by the lab, a temporary crown will be placed to allow you to have full function of your mouth while you wait for the permanent replacement to come in - this process usually takes around 2 weeks.

Once the permanent crown is available, our staff will remove the temporary crown and apply its replacement. This crown will be more permanent. Care will be taken to ensure a proper fit, comfortable bite and pleasing appearance. Once everything is ready, the crown is permanently cemented in the mouth and you are left with a tooth replacement that mimics your natural tooth.

It is important to properly care for your dental crown, just as you care for your natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing along with regular dental checkups with Dr. Xu will ensure the stability and cleanliness of your dental crown for many years.

If you have any questions regarding a dental crown, how to care for one or to see if you are a candidate, please feel free to call us for an appointment today at 503-967-0033.
